What you’re seeing appears to be simply what a 4K scan is capable of capturing when working with a large-format film image. There’s no indication at all that the image is being artificially enhanced or sharpened in any way. The detail and sharpness looks gorgeously natural, too. Every tiny wrinkle in the leather gloves of the RAF pilots, every facial pore, every strand of hair, every ripple on the ocean’s surface, every fiber in the soldiers’ uniforms is gloriously apparent, leaving no technical limitation standing between you and the feeling that you’re witnessing real action through a window rather than just watching a film on a TV.ĭunkirk is a seriously handsome film.

As a result, an astonishing 70% of Dunkirk was shot using IMAX cameras (which run horizontally), with the rest (predominantly dialogue sequences) being shot on standard 65mm cameras (which run vertically). In fact, his medium of choice is the 65mm film stock used predominantly these days for shooting in IMAX. Nolan is unusual in modern cinema for refusing to use digital cameras when shooting his films. There are moments of palpable tension too, as well as some memorable performances - most notably Mark Rylance as the captain of one of the countless small English vessels that sailed out to rescue the trapped allied soldiers, and Kenneth Branagh as the British Colonel desperately trying to manage the rescue attempt.Įven ex One Directioner Harry Styles manages to be anonymously average rather than shockingly bad, which is a pleasant change from your typical car crash pop star movie cameo. It looks consistently magnificent, and while I might have issues with the film’s overall structure, the editing of its various individual scenes is beautifully done. This being a Christopher Nolan film, though, there are upsides. In the end the main thing I took away from Dunkirk the film was a feeling that I hadn’t really got a sense of Dunkirk the event at all. Except that the film’s structure and the way Hans Zimmer’s over-bearing score is so consistently used to bind the film’s disparate parts together doesn’t really make it easy to identify with or care about many of the characters. "She sourced materials from all over the world," Patel marveled.I guess you could argue this approach personalizes what might otherwise just be an emotionless spectacle. Patel was taken aback by the sheer variety of fabrics, accessories, and more that Turzanka was able to find. And it's fibers of just tree bark, mushed together and it's a material that has been used especially in Africa for hundreds and hundreds of years." "It looks less like leather and more like wool felt. "The material that I think I'm the most excited about is bark-cloth," Turzanka said.

And it has the texture of leather, or the texture of suede really." So I started researching bizarre new, for me at least, materials like mycoleather, for example, which is made of fungus. So yes, it is cruelty-free, but it's terrible for the environment. "I started looking at fake furs and fake leathers and realized that a lot of fake leather or faux leather, and a lot of fake fur is just made from plastic.
